He blazed through the early 18th century like a musical firestorm. Vivaldi—"il prete rosso"—the Red Priest, named for his fiery red hair as well as his ecclesiastical calling. Antonio Vivaldi had more influence on music in the following centuries than any other composer except Johann Sebastian Bach (and Vivaldi was a huge influence on Bach)! Best known worldwide for his concertos (his The Four Seasons is playing somewhere on earth every waking second), he also wrote some of the most energetic and celebrated choral music ever written for the church. His setting of the Gloria ranks second only to Handel's Messiah as the most played, performed, and loved work in the choral-orchestral repertoire. Come hear this wonderful composition, performed by The Virginia Consort Chamber Chorus and professional orchestra, as the featured work for our May, 2011 concert, A Little May Music.

This concert will feature performances by both The Virginia Consort and the Youth Chorale as well as a pre-concert performance at 6:30 pm by The Prelude Choir. For more information, call 434.944.8444.
